Dear readers!!  Sadly Laduree Sydney and Woollahra have permanently closed.

Dear readers, after years of dreaming, hoping and praying Ladurée – a true Parisian iconic and celebrated tea salon is now here in our very own CBD and the sophisticated suburb of Woollahra in Sydney.  Recognised world wide by its logo of sweet cherubs adorned as pastry chefs, celadon green facade and interiors – the same colour as their delightful traditional gift boxes.  Ladurée is also adored world wide for their decadent macaron towers, pastries and cakes and for their invention of and signature double decker macarons – two macaron shells sandwiched together with ganache and come in an array of gorgeous colours – some of which possess delightful names like the Marie Antoinette or Framboise.  While Louis-Ernest Ladurée, the famous French prolific and controversial writer,  founded the tea salon in 1862 on the Rue Royale his brilliant second cousin Pierre Defontaines invented the much loved macaron at the start of the 20th century.  Years later, due to great success, a second popular salon on the aristocratic Avenue des Champs-Élysées appeared.  While business was thriving and developing a good reputation as a pastry shop, Louis brilliant wife came up with a remarkable idea to set up a tea salon for the ladies.  Before Ladurée came to be the sophisticated Parisian mesdames and mademoiselles had no cafe or tea salon they could go to or enter for that matter as they were the domain of men at the time.  The tea salon became an immediate hit for the ladies of Paris who could at long last gather for teas, luncheons and gossip in opulent surroundings and indulge in heavenly sweets and sandwiches while sipping exotic tea from opulent tea cups and sets.

Sydney’s Ladurée, situated in the high end designer floor space of our Westfield in the CBD, attracts Sydney- siders and tourists alike and is so popular especially on weekends that it’s a challenge to at times to instantly be seated at a table.  You won’t get the same Parisian oo la la factor or experience at Laduree Sydney as you would if you were at her sister store on the Champs-Élysées, however, the elegance and touch of opulence is there just on a much smaller and modified scale.  The experience oozes with that Parisian refinement and chic from the prettily displayed glass counter filled with a rainbow of coloured macarons, shimmering gold framed mirror and ribbons mimicking the delightful hues of the macarons hang gracefully from the side for that perfect gift wrap.  Macaron towers of various sizes rest upon a display cabinet filled with Ladurée merchandise like scented candles, fragrances, jams, tea pots, whimsical gift boxes, books and of course an artfully made angel icing cake with a tower of macarons on top.  To add to the Parisian ambience,  decadent petite occasional chairs upholstered in a mushroom tone damask fabric with celadon green accents rest gracefully beside round Parisian cafe tables all of which are contained within a framework of delightful French hedges and the elegant counter at front and display cabinet to the side.  To add to that French feel, the Parisian inspired Pretty Ballerina shoe store with its candy like ballerina slippers reminiscent of Boutique Repetto in Paris and chrystal chandeliers enhances the experience and the feeling that you are perhaps in one of Paris’ Grands Magasins.

The menu at Ladurée Sydney is not as impressive as its Paris tea salons’ in the sense that you won’t get that mind boggling selection of cakes and pastries or savoury items like omelettes, salads, quiche or sandwiches.  However, there is a small selection of tea cakes on offer including the very French Madeleine and Financier it is their signature macarons we flock to try and that is what the Sydney store aims to capitalise on.   On offer are a lovely selection of teas, coffees, sorbets and creamy, rich beverages including their chocolate chaud – a decadent hot chocolate and not to forget champagne if it’s more than a cup of tea you need to perk up at tea time.   For me, sipping a fragrant quality leaf tea from their stunningly beautiful tea cups and stirring a cube of sugar with a decadent tea spoon is already a satisfying experience.  To make the experience more memorable enjoy a selection of macarons or Ladurée’s elegant high tea where you can delight on divine sweets on gloriously assembled tiered plates.  When it comes to price, Ladurée is most certainly a splurge but it’s an experience worth paying those extra few dollars for as you always leave with a satisfied smile and sweet tooth.  Also, we must take into account that we are paying for and indulging in a luxury brand as well as the high transportation cost of flying in those délicieux macarons from Switzerland where they are made to meet such high demand.

Ladurée’s newer store at Woollahra is a stunning addition to the already European and sophisticated boutique culture of Queen Street Woollahra.  The concept here is not tea salon but rather a macaron boutique where you can walk in and purchase macarons or pre order macaron towers or cakes (you can also order these delights in the city store).  There are no tables or chairs to be seen here or even a French poof to rest your tired self upon, however, you will get friendly service with a smile and an injection of much needed, at times, Parisian inspiration.  The theme of cherubs and ethereal elegance with macaron towers and fancy displays continues on here at the Ladurée Woollahra store.  However, the feel here is very reminiscent of a fairy-tale candy store or of a Princess’ jewellery box – the epitome of Parisian elegance, luxury and creativity.  The selection of les macarons in Woollhara is a touch smaller than its city sister store, however, all the permanent favourites like salted caramel, cafe coffee, chocolate, orange blossom, pistachio and rose petal are here peeking whimsically out from the immaculately displayed counter window.  The macaron collection in both stores reflect the seasons (how wonderfully French!) and especially when the warmer seasons arrive you will be delighted with flavours like blackcurrant violet, coconut, pure chocolate from Granada, gingerbread and many more.  If it’s an out of the box extravagant gift you’re after for someone who has everything or just adores French things you will most certainly put a smile on their face with a lovely scented candle, fragrant loose leaf tea, a tea set, fragrance or a  interesting selection of food products like jam.  Gift wrapping here is part of the Ladurée service and a joy to observe staff as they allow you to select your favourite colour box and ribbon which they put together so perfectly and then pop it into a pretty Ladurée  signature gift bag.

Whether your’e in Paris, Sydney or anywhere in the world come to Ladurée to experience a taste of old Paris in every sense of the world.   Here is where the macarons and decor are the inspiration of Paris’ beautiful belle epoc age where decadence and luxury were of optimum importance.  Don’t come to a Ladurée store if you’re in a hurry visit when you have ample time to enjoy the Parisian whimsy and beautiful surroundings and to sample at least a few of the decandent macarons on offer.  Offer a smile to the plump cherubs on the walls and to the pretty tea pots on display for sale or perhaps place an order on a marvellous macaron tower that will make a statement on your table and impress your guests for years to come.  So dear readers, are you entranced by Ladurée Sydney brought to you by Paris France?
